UDUPI MATTU GULLA EGGPLANT/20 seeds per pack
A UNIQUE HEIRLOOM VARIETY FROM INDIA WITH A GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION (GI) TAG
The Udupi brinjal, or Gulla, is an heirloom vegetable with a history spanning hundreds of years and holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, safeguarding its uniqueness. Originating from Mattu, a coastal village near Katpady in Udupi, India, it earned the name Gulla due to its spherical shape.
Despite sharing the shape of purple brinjal, Mattu Gulla distinguishes itself with its green color adorned with light green stripes. Characterized by thin skin, thick pulp, and fewer seeds, this variety is celebrated for its distinct taste and flavor, coupled with a richness in iron content.
Mattu Gulla, a large and round brinjal, derives its name from the Tulu language, where “Gulla” means round. Light green stripes, thin skin, ample pulp, and minimal seeds define its appearance. Notably, it sports thorns on the stalk, setting it apart from other Gullas.
An intriguing aspect of the Gulla is its property called “nanju,” possibly referring to a form of poison. Immersing the Gulla in water for a duration turns the water blackish, altering the Gulla’s taste from astringent to a new and flavorful profile.
